Get Involved in the Legislative Issues Impacting Your Cooperative! When state or federal politicians make laws affecting the electric industry that means you will be impacted. It could mean your costs go up, it could mean power plants become more costly or difficult to build, it could affect power reliability, and it could result in the loss of jobs. But the bottom line is, you are directly affected by the energy laws created in St. Paul, MN and Washington, D.C.

That’s why we want you to be involved in our political action efforts. Currently, we’re faced with legislation related to alleged “climate change” and “global warming.” These bills, if enacted, could be devastating to individual homeowners and businesses as well as our economy. Remember, we are member-owned and not-for-profit, so our objective is to provide environmentally-responsible power at affordable prices in a reliable manner.

You can help in three ways:

1. Our Energy, Our Future - A Dialogue with America

Minnesota is facing tremendous challenges in our energy sector. In the coming years, we must address these often-competing goals:

bullet Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
bullet Increase generating capacity by 30 percent to keep up with projected demand over the next 20 years
bullet Prevent the possibility of an electricity shortage
bullet Keep electricity affordable

We must address the tough questions, build consensus and make smart decisions.

As Minnesota’s elected officials begin to discuss enacting a state or regional cap and trade program or carbon tax, we are asking them to consider the following questions:

bullet What is your plan to make sure we have the electricity we’ll need in the future?

bullet What are you doing to speed the development of new technology which will allow me to have the electric power I need while meeting our state’s climate policy goals?

bullet How much is all this going to increase my electric bill and what will you do to make it affordable?

bullet How will you keep existing jobs and attract new businesses to Minnesota if our electric rates are higher than those in neighboring states?

Begin a dialogue about energy policy with Minnesota’s elected officials today. Visit www.OurEnergyMN.coop to join the thousands of American consumers who have already sent tens of thousands of letters and emails to elected officials asking about our nation's energy and climate policy. At ourenergymn.coop you'll find pre-written email letters ready to be sent to your legislators.

2. Take Action

When a legislative issue arises, you will be notified in your monthly issue of County Lines asking you to link to our Take Action website. There you’ll find a pre-written e-mail letter, and in just a couple clicks of your mouse, you can send the letter to your legislators. It’s quick, simple and at no cost. Click here to visit the Take Action website.

3. Co-op Owners for Political Action (COPA)

More than 30,000 electric cooperative employees, trustees and members nationwide belong to this political action group. For just $2.08 per month your contribution will support legislators and candidates who support electric cooperatives. Fill out the form below to sign up for COPA.

Our ability to serve you depends on your determination to stand together with us as part of a grassroots network that sends a strong message to our elected officials on behalf of member-owned electric cooperatives.
