Get Involved in the
Legislative Issues Impacting Your
Cooperative! When state or federal
politicians make laws affecting the
electric industry that means you will be
impacted. It could mean your costs go
up, it could mean power plants become
more costly or difficult to build, it
could affect power reliability, and it
could result in the loss of jobs. But
the bottom line is, you are directly
affected by the energy laws created in
St. Paul, MN and Washington, D.C.
That’s why we want you to be involved in
our political action efforts. Currently,
we’re faced with legislation related to
alleged “climate change” and “global
warming.” These bills, if enacted, could
be devastating to individual homeowners
and businesses as well as our economy.
Remember, we are member-owned and
not-for-profit, so our objective is to
provide environmentally-responsible
power at affordable prices in a reliable
manner.
You can help in three ways:
1. Our Energy, Our
Future - A Dialogue with America
Minnesota is facing tremendous
challenges in our energy sector. In the
coming years, we must address these
often-competing goals:
 |
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions |
 |
Increase generating capacity by 30
percent to keep up with projected
demand over the next 20 years |
 |
Prevent the possibility of an
electricity shortage |
 |
Keep electricity affordable
|
We must address the tough questions,
build consensus and make smart
decisions.
As Minnesota’s elected officials begin
to discuss enacting a state or regional
cap and trade program or carbon tax, we
are asking them to consider the
following questions:
 |
What is your plan to make
sure we have the electricity we’ll
need in the future?
|
 |
What are you doing to speed the
development of new technology which will
allow me to have the electric power I
need while meeting our state’s climate
policy goals?
|
 |
How much is all this going to
increase my electric bill and what will
you do to make it affordable?
|
 |
How will you keep existing jobs and
attract new businesses to Minnesota if
our electric rates are higher than those
in neighboring states?
|

energy policy with Minnesota’s elected
