Energy Assistance

It is your responsibility to contact Freeborn Mower Cooperative Services (FMCS) if you are having difficulty paying your monthly electric bill. We would rather work with you to create a payment plan to handle the overdue amount before it becomes a crisis situation. Accounts that are in arrears will be subject to disconnection.

COLD WEATHER RULE

Minnesota has a “cold weather rule” that regulates residential electric service disconnections between October 15 and April 15, if disconnection would affect the primary heat source.

bullet You must declare an “inability to pay” on forms provided by FMCS. Along with this form, you must provide documentation that your household income is less than 50 percent of the state median income.

bullet To be protected by the cold weather rule, if you are not current paying your bill, or, at any time, you can enter into a payment schedule that considers the financial resources of your household and must stay current with the payments under the schedule. Contact our office if you are behind in your payments.

bullet You must receive referrals to energy assistance, weatherization and/or conservation programs that are designed to likely reduce your energy bills.

If you do not meet all of the conditions listed above, you will not qualify for protection from winter disconnection.

Should you receive a disconnect notice for nonpayment this winter, you will also be provided with more information. You may request that FMCS notify a third party if your electric service becomes subject to disconnection.

Assistance with energy bills is provided by the agencies listed below. You are encouraged to contact the agency servicing your area for more information.
